I was in the vicinity of Balsam Lake on 01/08, Skillet. There was 10-12" of fresh powder on top of the firm base layer and snowshoes were definitely needed! Even on the trails that were already broken they were handy.

We took Exit 19 (Kingston) off I-87 then headed west on Route 28 all the way through Fleischmann's to the town of Arkville. Take 49 (Dry Brook Road) south from the middle of the 'town' for 1.5 miles or so, then make a right onto Mill Brook Road. The trailhead parking lot is another 1.5 miles or so up the road. The parking lot had been ploughed but who knows what precip./melt/freeze has occurred since then.

Check out www.viewsfromthetop.com to see if recent trail conditions have been posted.
Happy Hiking!
