With all that's been going on these past months, it seems this forum has been pretty quiet. U.S. Attorney firings ("It's performance-based! It's political! It's a floor wax! It's a dessert toppning!"), Supreme Court decisions, Cheney's mysterious Fourth Branch of government, Gonzales's trip to Ashcroft's hospital bed, and, most of all, W's "C'mon guys, wait a while, we're really making progress in Iraq, this time I mean it, things will work out fine if we just stay longer, honest!"--all with nary a peep from the gunks.commmies.

Is it because we're no longer surprised by anything from this administration since we've resigned ourselves to W's apparently complete detachment from reality for the next year and a half?

I know I have!

Nope... It's cause everyone already has their own opinions... And there can be no actual debate of anything, just people spouting opinion...

So it's boring!

But this ... Well this is fun!

I can't really pay attention any more. It's too painful to be indignant all the time so I try to ignore most of it now. That, and I'm not really expecting a great deal of improvement with the next election. The American people don't seem to be willing to hold out for someone who's truthful and the democrats are the weakest bunch of ridiculous pansies I could imagine.

Well, in the democracy I grew up with, opinion mattered. The very word "democracy" means rule by the people, and pressure from the masses should have some effect. Even a president not subject to reelection would feel some pressure from those within his party not to continue tremendously unpopular policies that would sink them in the next legislative round.

But W's imperviousness to the public will is simply astounding. He just barges ahead, sure that he is right and that history will vindicate him. I've already gotten used to shaking my head at his (and by inference his advisors') detachment from basic facts, but his detachment from the will of the people continues to reach new highs (or lows). And many of those in his party are serving as enablers; they got trounced in the last election largely because of Iraq, and I wonder what they think will happen in the next election if thing go on as they are.

Detachment from factual reality has been a hallmark of this administration from the start. Detachment from political reality seems like a newer development (at least through the start of his second term, his team had been deemed politically savvy). And it also means no one has any leverage over this guy as long as a third of the folks in the House or Senate are willing to back him no matter what.

But yeah, the blending thing was kinda fun.

Which is great for a "democracy" but pretty damn boring for a web message board...

It seems to me that some people on this site have had many lenthy and interesting discussions over issues of far less political importance in the past, so at least some people had found it interesting.

I was just wondering why those discussions (by those people who found them interesting) were lacking recently, and whether this administration's apparent imperviousness to opinion and logic had anything to do with it.

I wonder what percentage of the banter on this site is actually relevant to climbing...

Opinion matters in here only if it tends to support what someone is posting about. Otherwise it’s a right wing ultra conservative conspiracy. Nuff said…

What might I write?

I told you so
I told you so
I told you so...

Learning the details of what we know has been going on is not really news, and none of it seems to make a difference. I'd love to see Gonzalez go, but so what, getting rid of him won’t fix what he has done.

As for the war, as much as I was always against it, I feel that we destroyed the Iraqis’ country and we owe it to them fix it as best we can!

Truth would go a long way. If the government said we really screwed them (the Iraqui public), we owe it to them.. I’d be OK with having troops there! I am not OK with staying there to fight "terrorists".

How come the Iraqis fighting over there are terrorists?
GW says that as if they were all Alkaida, which they are not, and as if they would be here fighting us tomorrow.

We know they are not Alkaida, but let him imply it all the time.

What I hear is one sad story after another. Listen to last weeks “This American Life”, “Who Can you Save” as just one example.
