Yea, that's the Palmaghatt (sp?) Ravine. The general idea of the previous discussion was not to go there. In classic PIPC logic: "It is a beautiful, unique area. You'll never see another spot like it. So don't go there. Really. Keep out or we'll do something unpleasant to you."

nice try, mike. the real answer is the hike you are looking for is called gertrudes nose, easily the best hike in the gunks and perfectly OK in any sense of the word. from the main millbrook trail, starting at the upper minnewaska parking lot, and following the signs for millbrook, go just past the landmark glacial erratic called pattersons pellet. keep looking and you'll see a blazed, small trail on the right side of the main trail heading into the woods just after. follow the trail along spectactular cliff lines with views of the palmaghatt ravine all the way to gertrudes nose and keep going it takes you all the way back to millbrook on the other side with views of the wallkill valley.

LOL if you really wanted to climb there you're not really going to want to go down in to the ravine proper now would you? unless you want to climb some rare species of moss? ;-)

when people -particularly climbers- mention the palmaghatt they are usually curious about climbing there...* btw I would characterize anything in the ravine as not hiking but rather bushwacking, there are no trails... not too pleasant...
anyway the original post was about hiking which refers to the Gertrudes Nose Trail, didn't want to confuse anything... why the post went off topic is beyond me... ;-) I guess it started with mention of the ravine... everything clear as mud now?
PS The other side of the ravine is the Hamilton Point trail, also worth doing...
