Can anyone recommend a couple of pretty, laid back hikes around there? Nothing hard core ... something I could do with my girl in a few lazy hours, lunch included.

Going past Giant's Ledges, to Panther, is pretty nice and fairly short... about 7 miles round trip, or you could shorten it up by turning around at Giant's Ledges.

I hear that Kaaterskill Falls is nice but I've never been there.

Or you could do Devil's Path, starting at Indian Head and doing however many of the peaks you want. There is a 10- or 12-mile loop that starts at Indian Head, goes over Twin and Sugarloaf, and finishes with a mile or two on the road back to the Indian Head parking lot -- this is not exactly lazy, but you can shorten it up by bailing out either after Indian Head or after Twin. There are side trails at either one.

Go to North Lake and hike along the Escarpment in either direction. Artists Rock is a truly easy hike.

Huckleberry Point is about as easy as you can go in the Clove. It's about an hour each way, has incredible views. It's on the Trail Conference Map, and it leaves from the area around the "Hell Hole" where you might have been Ice Climbing.

Highly recommended.

so we ended up doing the escarpment trail. it's beautiful! the descriptions didn't do it justice. perfect for a short or a long stroll. and great for anyone inclined to laziness ... in under a mile you find yourself at a cliff with a gorgeaou view from about a thousand feet above the plains ... not a foot of which you worked for. the trailhead must be a lot higher than it looks!

the trail is fun and rocky/scrambly in that new england way.

The Escarpment Trail is a lovely trail and it is worth doing the entire 23 or so miles if you spot a car at both ends. (Or do it as an out and back if you you do not mind hiking in the dark) \:\)
If its effort you want try starting from the trail head in Palenville, where you start closer in elevation to the base of the escarpment. It is a good steady climb up through pretty forest.

Now next you MUST do the Devil's Path route Pedestrian describes.
