a few years ago, there was a tech tip or training guide in either Rock and Ice or Climbing, about making a sloper training bar, using a PVC pipe and a 2x4 and some skateboard grip tape. anyone make one? worth it? anyone find the directions? i searched my pile of old mags, can't find it. Thanks, E

A somewhat similar training device is sprouting up in gyms as a campusing board and using progressively overhanging pipe pieces covered in grip tape. I've not used it but it seems popular and seems less likely to result in the catastophic torn finger tendon. I was hoping this thread title meant Slopur had returned from eastern Europe/Asia.

What are you specifically trying to train for? finger streagth, grip strength, core... my Rock rings do it for me and they are very convient. (Now if I could just get motivated to use them again)
2cents incerted.

Slopur training? So do you make something like a slopur then avoid touching it at all costs? I mean that would be better training since all I ever do is avoid slopurs at all costs.

well The rings let you do a little of everything. Added bonus if you attach them with a Biner then you can take them home with you or wherever you go. added to that one of those door jam pullup bars and you can train just about anywhere.

I remember seeing it, and thinking that it didn't give enough variety. I guess a round pipe is a good start, but it gets boring hanging off the same thing every day. I think just getting a couple big sloper holds would work better, but probably cost a lot more.
I used to set sloper only routes and problems at the gym for some people who asked for them.

As far as the PVC pipes go, it's probably a waste to have 26 inches of a large pipe and 26" of a small pipe below it. I would cut 6" sections, and put them at the same level- 8", 4", 8", 4" or something like that. As for mounting, it also seems like a waste to use the entire pipe when you're only going to use 1/4" of the pipe. I would cut one quarter and mount it on a shelf on the board.
As for how to hang it, I would use cable up to a crossbeam to bear the weight, or mount on top of a 4x4. Use c-clamps to clamp it to the upright beam just to keep it in place.
