Okay, winter is upon us, the ice in the Adirondacks is fat, the skiing is better than its been in years (at least up here in northern NY) and yet…

I spent a couple of days in J Tree when visiting the in-laws for Christmas. All that sun and all those wonderful southern exposures have whetted my appetite for more. So, I’m hoping that conditions over the next couple of months may allow for some local rock activity.

Therefore, I’d like to hear recommendations for likely sun bowl opportunities in and around the Gunks. Trapps, Nears, sure, but also some distal crags. I’d also like to know where closures are in effect. For example, some years ago I visited Bonticou when in search of winter sun. What’s the latest with access there? Alternatively, is there a site where this information is posted? Ditto Table Rocks.

Thanks.

Bonticou is open... And always has been, as long as you're on Preserve property.

Have at it!

My understanding is that the "Sun Bowl" at Bonticou is on private property and the new owner will prosecute any trespassers. I would love to hear that I am wrong, even though there isn't much there that I could actually free climb. The section of Bonticou that is on preserve land gets late day sun for a couple hours at most.

Table Rocks is mostly Preserve lands so go ahead and climb, but I haven't seen too many tasty lines there, and mostly no natural anchors on top if one is disposed to TR-self belay or otherwise. Perhaps others have explored this further and have recommendations for out there. Right now, I'd say the thing to do is strap on your skis, and leave the harness in the closet while there's decent snow!!

the poison ivy wall at west point gets lots of sun in the morning and is often a comfortable place to climb in the winter. although a day like today would be tough i'm sure.

I appreciate the willingness to reply but lament the confusion about "what's in" and "what's out." I failed in a search to find any posted maps that clearly indicate where current Preserve/private property boundaries are for these sites. Anyone with that kind of information, please chime in.

Here is a parcel map of the Bonticou area. Not sure where sun bowl is located. .

[road in upper right is Cragswood Road - Main Bonticou cliff is in the left portion of the frame]

Table rock is north of this photo, but is completely on Preserve land..

I went to the Ulster Co. GIS site to try to identify the parcels in the image pda supplied and got mixed results. The narrow linear parcel running across Bonticou from approximately NNW to SSE is land associated with the Catskill Aqueduct. West of that are two large parcels with an irregular boundary (angular to south, curved to north) that had no identification listed in the Ulster GIS. Does anyone know if these are part of the Preserve?

Smaller parcels E of the aqueduct (SE of Bonticou) are private. The larger parcel just north of those is identified as "Forest Land Under Section 480 of the Real Property Tax Law". I have no idea if that's state land or not. Again, could use some help here.

So what analysis: I'm still not sure about where the Preserve property line is but assuming the tax parcel map is current, it seems that the main Bonticou cliffs visible in the image are not listed as private property.
