I have sad news to report regarding Hank Tracynger. On Friday he experienced a series of seizures and was taken to a hospital in Tarrytown. There he had a massive stroke from which he was not expected to recover. Hank died on Saturday, ending what for him was a very difficult period in his life.
A gathering to celebrate Hank's life is being planned, and information will be posted as soon as a date is set.
In lieu of flowers, make a contribution in Hank's memory to Mohonk Preserve, Inc., PO Box 715, New Paltz, NY

I am deeply saddened of the passing of my old friend, Hank. We knew each other for over 30 years, rock climbing, ice climbing, hiking, winter mountaineering, skiing and running. His love of life and being outdoors was so infectious. I will miss him dearly.
I'm sorry to hear of Hank's passing. I only met him one time, in the 2006 season. He took a day to help with trail work, and regaled us with story after story of adventure. It was so clear that he loved the natural world and respected it deeply, and he made quite an impression on me. I was very saddened to hear of his stroke this past year, and the difficulty he was having in trying to recover. For such a vital person, it must have been frustrating beyond comprehension. My thoughts and wishes for comfort in this time of sorrow, to his family and friends.

Hank was and still is one of my climbing heroes. His enthusiasm and spirit was amazing, as was his drive to remain healthy and active at an age when a lot of people retire to Florida. He will still be an inspiration to me whenever I don't feel like getting off my lazy butt and doing something. Go out and climb something soon, and tell the beautiful breeze at the top of the cliff that you climbed that day to remember Hank. Be at peace my friend.

So sorry to hear about Hank. I only met him once, out for a day climbing with him, Dick, Annie and Elaine. Someone told me he was in his 70s at the time, and I was so impressed - I hope I can look so fit and continue to climb when I'm in my 70s. Very nice man, he will be missed.

If you can't be a good example, then you'll have to be a horrible warning.
Henry “Hank” Trancynger, 74, a Gardiner resident, died January 12, 2008 following a long illness during which he resided at the New York State Veterans Home at Montrose. A U.S. Air Force veteran, 1952-1956, he served in the Korean War zone.
The son of Alexander and Blanche Szczotkowski Trancynger, Hank was born February 25, 1933 and grew up in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY. He attended Cortland State Teachers College, later receiving an electrical technician degree from NYC Electrical Technician Degree from NYC Community College, applying his electronics skills at IBM from 1958 until his retirement in 1991.
Hank’s love of life was reflected in everything he did. A top athlete, he was captain of his gymnastic team in high school. The boy from Brooklyn eventually ran two NYC Marathons, the Boston Marathon, and a triathlon. He hiked high peaks in this county, Canada, and Europe. After retirement he became a certified rock-climbing guide, teaching for 5 years on the cliffs above his home. He was also an avid ice climber and downhill skier.
Hank met Louise Kerr-Andress rock climbing at the “Gunks” in 1986, whom he married September 14, 1991. Together, in their small Winnebago, they traveled the country and Canada hiking, rock-climbing, and enjoying people they met. A lover of music and literature, he collected a large library of books and CDs. Hank was an enthusiastic host of countless parties for diverse sets of friends.
His wife and stepchildren survive him: Susan (John) Cordes, Mary Andress, and Carrie Andress.
He was the proud father of Christopher (Dia) Trancynger, MD, his daughter Julie (Tom) Kimball, and his grandchildren: Ian, Eric, and Kate Trancynger; and Alex and Jackie Kimball. Jackie Fabrizio Trancynger, his former wife, survives him.
A memorial gathering will be held this spring, date to be determined. In lieu of flowers a contribution in his memory can be made to Mohonk Preserve, Inc., PO Box 715, New Paltz, NY 12561
The gathering to celebrate Hank's life will take place on May 3 at 4:00 at the Pine Bush firehouse. More information will be forthcoming, but please put this on your calendar if you are interested in coming. Mim
