Meanwhile, an off-leash dog just bit a six-year-old boy, and rabies shots will be required unless the owner can be found and the dog checked out. See Hank Alicandri's post.
We were also at the Gunks last weekend - saw numerous sniff to growl fests and observed one unleashed dog urinate on someone else's pack, along with having to shout over barking to communicate with my climbing partner. None of the above were pleasant.
Come on folks - it was close to, if not over 80 degrees on Saturday & no shade. Do you really think it was a quality outing for your dog? Tied (maybe) to a tree, laying in the hot sun in the middle of a rocky trail, while you are climbing? Even the best natured/behaved dogs are likely to exhibit undesirable behaviors.
Lest you think I'm a dog hater, my two dogs were happily & safely at home in their shady, fenced in yard, away from strangers, rockfall and other hazards, being tended to by a local teenager.
I strongly support any and all efforts to reduce the impact of irresponsible dog owners.
Was at the cliff with my girlfriend and dog and we had a great time on Friday. First time the three of us had been to the cliff since last fall. We plan on doing this a lot. We had her leashed the whole time and she was quite adorable. At least that is what everybody told us. It must be her new summer shave. Everyone says she looks like a lion. Climbers were taking pictures of her, too. We climbed single pitches and top roped.
She did whine a bit when climbers would walk by and not pet her or show her any attention. She is such a push over for a 90lbs chow mix.
We did run into a few dogs that were unleashed. We didn't say anything to the dog's owners, that's the job of the Mohonk rangers.
On Saturday, we hiked out to Tablerock and then to Bonticou Crag for a little rest in a nice breeze that kept the Blackflies off us then back to the car. We did almost seven miles of hiking.
I know we would pay for a gunks dog permit.
Sorry to hear about the kid getting bit. That's something we always think about with such a large dog. We did meet a lot of people with kids and most wanted to pet her. She is very good around kids.
This quote is taken from the other thread about the dog bite:
BTW- here is my two cents on dogs at the climbing area... if you tie your dog up and leave it at the base of a climb, or let it run around off leash you are doing your dog, the environment and other folks a disservice. That's why the Preserve has an on leash and under the owners control policy for dogs.Feel free to ignore this policy- but know that for some who make that choice Preserve Rangers will locate you and warn you. If you choose to ignore the written warning a second time you will have to get your climbing jones on at Minnewaska, or in one of the excllent gyms around, because we will pull your Preserve membership.Keep your ear to the ground on this and you will see that I kid you not. I do not spend a lot of time here, but feel free to contact me by phone 845-255-0919 or stop by for a chat around the cliff.Have a good one! hank alicandri
