Never been to the gunks, I'm bringing a couple not real experienced climbers, so i'm looking for some good top rope options, preferably out of the way so not to clog up good lead/multi pitch routes and piss everybody off. either lead or top access, doesn't matter. Any help would be greatly apreciated. Thanks!

the first few hundred yards of the trapps are good for TR access, up until about the Gerdie Block.

and what i mean by best is the cheapest, no showers, no rv's, just tents and fire pits, and maybe some chilled out people

State multi-use area is about as ghettofabulous as you can get.
its free. but only camp in designated camping areas. you WILL get ticketed otherwise.

its on 299 just before the intersection with 44/55.

as for crowds, hell yes. packed.
peterskill is probably the better option to avoid the crowds.
but i've seen plenty of crowds at peterskill.

on beautiful days it seems that the peterskill permits are often sold out fairly early, maybe 10 or 10:30? I believe they recently started reselling the permits as people leave, though, which might help. or get there before 10 and you should be ok.
