A wildfire in Minnewaska State Park that began late in the day on Thursday has forced the closure of Route 44/55 from it's intersection with Rt 299 (Main Street) all the way to Kerhonkson, on the other side of the ridge. Access to the Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska has been cut off and no traffic is being permitted.
Those of you wishing to visit this weekend should contact the Mohonk Preserve, the State Police or check back here to see if the road is re-opened.
This is the view from town at about 4pm:

Possibly not a popular view, but aren't all the tree and forest scientists telling us the ridge evolved to need this type of fire. Why not let it go now while the ground is as moist as ever and the trees are nice and sappy. I know there are houses around, but I would think they would be reasonably protectable. I was very impressed by how Harriman S.P. recovered from and thrived from the brush fire we let go through there in the early 90s. Rob is probably out there fighting this one right now but might be the most knowledgable to address this.

With this beautiful weather, it's going to be a nightmare tomorrow when all the climbers and hikers show up to spend the day at the Gunks. When we arrived this morning, they didn't have the road blocked off by the deli, no problems getting up there, but by the time we left, they had the barricade up on the incoming side of the road. However, I didn't see any police monitoring the barricade.

The barricade was only up on the incoming side of the road (folks on the other side have to be able to get out) and there was no one monitoring it by 6 pm. The people at the Deli said that when the barricade was manned, they were letting people past but that no one was being allowed past Clove Road. If that situation continues, it won't be a problem for those heading to the West Trapps Lot.

Here is the latest of this evening. The fire started at the Catskill overlook on 44/55 and spread along the ridge south to the power line cut near Stony Kill Falls. Back fires were set along 44/55 from the entrance of Awosting parking lot to the overlook to prevent it from jumping north while back fires were set along the Lower Awosting carriage . Rough estimates that the fires have consumed about 1300 acres. So what that all means is the fire is in the area of Minniwaska park.
here is a pic I took at about 9 pm from 209 looking east.

Chip...
You are correct in that these types of fires are good for the natural process on the ridge. (And, with the latest update from 8pm of 1300 acres... It's covering quite a bit of territory!)
However, this is actually a very dangerous time of year as the ground is actually very dry as is much of the vegetation. The trees have not yet leafed which means that even though it rains the water evaporates quickly during the warm sunny days (much like this last week). Yes, Rob is out there right now... Probably for another hour or so at least. But, he did learn me that last factoid
So, without proper management the fire could go out of control and consume much more land and endanger not only park buildings and resources but people's property.
Right now, I am sitting less than 2 miles from the main fire. Thankfully downslope and upwind...
Thanks Dill. Smike, those are impressive shots. Probably even more so when your investment could potentially become involved. Hope everyone out there this weekend stays safe. I've been in the woods during two brush fires and both were impressively not dangerous as the canopy never caught and you could just walk around the areas of brush involved. I hope this one stays that way for everyone and the ridge.

I was out on the fire line today up by Lake Awosting. Pics to come later (pretty damn impressive) Now back at home seeing if we have to pack up as the fire has turned, so off to drink a beer and eat.

Good luck with the wind and direction. I was surprised to see the wind coming out of the Northeast this afternoon, and at a pretty good clip, too. Must have made controlling the fire extremely difficult.
