-Hi-
A white dog and black dog traveling off leash with a male and a female yesterday on Undercliff road bit a six year old boy. If you are the owner, or have knowledge of the dog or owner please contact me as soon as possible. I am trying to determine the status of the dogs rabies shots. This needs to happen quickly if the child is to avoid getting rabies shots. Please landline me at the Preserve if you can help (845)255-0919.

Hi
we were able to locate the dog owner and put her in touch with the parents of the bitten child- only by the really good work of one of the Preserve rangers

BTW- here is my two cents on dogs at the climbing area... if you tie your dog up and leave it at the base of a climb, or let it run around off leash you are doing your dog, the environment and other folks a disservice. That's why the Preserve has an on leash and under the owners control policy for dogs.Feel free to ignore this policy- but know that for some who make that choice Preserve Rangers will locate you and warn you. If you choose to ignore the written warning a second time you will have to get your climbing jones on at Minnewaska, or in one of the excllent gyms around, because we will pull your Preserve membership.Keep your ear to the ground on this and you will see that I kid you not. I do not spend a lot of time here, but feel free to contact me by phone at the number above, or stop by for a chat around the cliff.Have a good one!

Glad to hear that parents of the child were put in touch with the dog owner an hopefully the kid will be ok and a series of shots unnecessary.

It is also encouraging to hear that the dog issue is being take seriously by the Preserve as this is an issue that seems to get worse and worse every year.

I don't think giving 2 warnings before taking any action then pulling Preserve membership is taking it seriously (or did Hank mean one warning, then action ?)

Even so, what about non members ? Yank their day pass ?

Sorry. I know it's a park and the emphasis is on enjoyment; fines and tickets are not the preferred action. But the only way to stop the problem, short of an outright ban, is a stiff fine (perhaps after a warning) and pier pressure.

Finally, does the Preserve really have an accurate way to keep track of warnings ?

I think peer pressure is going to have to be a big part of it.
And ratting offenders out to the rangers. Which I have NO problem with.

Having seen the policy in action last weekend, I think it will have the desired effect. The first warning is written, the second time the person loses their membership.

i like the pier pressure idea. drop them off a pier or build a pier on top of them? tough call.

And what did the dog owner do when he/she saw their dog bite a 6 year old child? The usuall pacifyer... "don't worry he won't bite?" How come the parent didn't just shoot the owner?

Pretty sure most parents aren't walking around the Preserve armed with shooty type weapons?
